In the second part of Entwurf’s diagram, Freud’s central sexual sphere (“sexuelles Gebiet“) functions as the gravitational nucleus, exerting a deferred action across all elements within its orbit. This sphere, though unseen, orchestrates a complex interplay of relationships: laughter to laughter, cloth to cloth, shop to shop, etc. Each element is subtly influenced by this central sphere, aligning them into a coherent rotational pattern akin to hysteric repetition compulsion. The sexual sphere’s latent force puts every instance of laughter, every piece of cloth, and every shop into a dynamic, planetary-like motion, continuously shaping their interactions and significance through deferred action. I will return to this at the end of this essay.

Condensation in Freud’s Dream Work: Mechanisms of Repression

In Freud’s theory of Traumarbeit (dream work), condensation is a process where multiple ideas or impulses merge into a single, symbolic image. When we see a toilet in a dream, it may represent a metaphor (condensation) that already exists within the body itself: the shared function of the same organ for both urination and sexual expression. This highlights how repression operates — through symbolic substitutions and metaphors deeply embedded in the body.

The same channels involved in discharging both sexual needs and urine reflect Freud’s idea of “condensation,” where distinct urges are funneled into one outlet but cannot be fully canceled through it alone. Instead, they require a real dimension (comparable to the imaginary in mathematics) to be fully canceled and interpreted. In this dream, the toilet becomes a metaphor for the forbidden, where repressed desires and urges are condensed into a single image, urging us to resist relief and suppress instinctual drives, much like the body’s own mechanisms of repression.
